Wood carving work a continuation of yesyrtday.
At the beginning of the Larger Sutra, there is a passage called the Eight-stage Life Cycle of Bodhisattvas ("Hasso Jodo"). The sutra begins with the opening passage saying, "Thus have I heard. One time the Buddha stayed on the Vulture Peak near Rajagriha with twelve thousand great bhikkhus." After naming 31 senior bhikkhus, the sutra says that the Buddha was also attended by all the Bodhisattvas of the present age, who had all attained the same supreme enlightenment as Sakyamuni Buddha.
The passage of the eight-stage life cycle of Bodhisattvas is as follows: (1)Each Bodhisattva descends from the Tushita Heaven into the womb of his mother. (The Bodhisattva can be a woman, but just for convenience's sake, I will use the masculine gender.) (2)He is born from his mother's right armpit. (3)He lives an ordinary life as a prince in the palace. (4)Having realized the impermanence of life, he renounces the world. (5)After going through a life of self-mortification for six years, he abandons that kind of practice and sits in deep meditation under the Pippala tree. He finally conquers the demon who attacks him to obstruct him from attaining enlightenment. (6)He attains enlightenment. (7)Requested by gods, he decides to propagate the content of his enlightenment. (8)At age 80, he enters Nirvana under the Sala tree.
